Interview with a Korean political scientist talking about two movies released recently, "Park Hwa-young"
This is part of an interview with a political scientist talking about two movies released recently, "Park Hwa-young" (It is the name of a person in this movie, who wants to be called as Mama. 2018, directed by Lee Hwan) and "Jane"(2017, directed by Cho Hyunhoon). Filmfest München described the first one as, 'It's seldom found in this haunting portrait of a generation whose lives revolve around condescension, insults, instant noodles, and sex.'
I translated impressive(and funny) parts of the interview, mainly mentioning how politics are inevitably formed even in a chaotic situation for an individual who does not want to belong to the existed structured society.
-So why this movie is especially impressive.
Because of the complete chaotic status that these film characters are in. Political science researchers pay attention to the community where people live in. It is a big research topic, how people are transited to a structured status from a disorder. It is able to imagine, but not easily be simulated. You could see this in the movie "PARK HWA-YOUNG". I realized that certain peoples in this society experience the status of disorder which is going to shift to the status showing political behavior, in any form of that.
-Usually, people may see the importance of homeless teenagers. It is new to think about the "birth of politics".
Of course, I do think about required safe infrastructures in society. But simultaneously this movie indicates the main topic in politics. Humans make orders in any way unless they do not exist anymore, even for the teenagers in this movie who strongly refuse to belong to existed society, like school or family. It is possible to do not like ordered way but if humans are required to be within the ordered structures, then it is seriously questioned about the order of structure themselves, which kind of orders should be required.
-You do write periodic columns and do lectures, go for a movie.. 24 hrs are not enough for you?
And I like cartoons. Obviously, I need lots of time for these. It is possible since I do not do the things which most Korean men in my generation do. I am not interested in participating in alumni meetings, weddings or funerals of acquaintances. I do not like heavy drinking flocking together in bars. Instead, we make a small group who hunting for sweet desserts, which called as sweet solidarity.
